The Gerund

The Gerund คือ กริยา -นาม รูปของ gerund คือ กริยาเติม ing แต่ทำหน้าเป็นคำนาม

ความแตกต่างระหว่าง Gerund and Present Participle คือ ตัวอย่าง

ตัวอย่าง Gerund

He is fond of plalying cricket.

The old man was tired of walking.

We were prevented from seeing the prisoner.

Seeing is believing.

ตัวอย่าง Present Participle

Playing cricket, He gained health.

Walking along the road, he noticed a dead cobra.

Use of the Gerund การใช้

1.ใช้เป็นประธาน เช่น

Seeing is believing.

Hunting tigers is a favourite sport in this country.

2.ใช้เป็นกรรมของ กริยาเช่น

I am tired of waiting.

He is fond of swimming.

He was punished for telling a lie.

We were prevented from seeing the prisoner.

I have an aversion to fishing.

4.ใช้เป็นส่วนสมบูรณ์ เช่น

Seeing is believing.

What I most detest is smoking.

5.ใช้ขยายทั้งประโยคเช่น

Playing card being his aversion, we did not play bridge.

*The verbs listed below are followed by gerunds only: Verb + Gerund
คำกริยาเหล่านี้ตามด้วย Gerund
admit = He admitted taking the key.
appreciate/avoid/cosider/deny/enjoy/escape/finish/imagine/keep/miss/postpone/practice/quit/resent/resist/
suggest/stop.
-Stop may followed by an infinitve in this case is a modifier indicating purposse.= I stopped to talk to him.
(I stopped in order to talk to him.)

*The exprssions do you mind and would you mind are followed by a gerund. วลี 2 คำนี้ตามด้วย gerund
Do you mind closing the door? would you mind waiting for me?

*The verbs listed below may be followed by either an infinitve or a gerund with little or no change in meaining.:
beging = The woman began to laugh. /The woman began laughing.
continue= The traffic continued to move slowly. / The traffic continued moving slowly.
dislike= We dislike to play bridge. / We dislike playing bridge.
dread = I dread to think about it. / I dread thinking about it.
intend = They intend to call her tomorrow. / They intend calling her tomorrow.
like = I like to drive your car. / I like driving your car.
neglect = He neglected to file his income tax return./ He leglected filing his income tax return.
plan = I plan to take German next year./ I plan taking German next year.(or: I plan on taking German next year.
prefer = He prefers to type his own letters. / He prefers typing his own letters.
start = She starts to teach tomorrow./ She starts teaching tomorrow.
*After verbs dislike,like,and prefer the meaning expressed by the gerund is sometimes different from that
expressed by the infinitive. Compare: I like to swim and to play tennis.(the activities) /
I like swimming and tennis.(the plan)
*The auxiliary can't + bear or stand may also be followed by either the infinitive or gerund.
I can't bear to see her cry. / I can't bear seeing her cry.
I can't stand to hear that again. / I can't stand hearing that again.
*The verbs remember and try may be followed by either an infinitve or a gerund,but the meaning is usually
diffent. Compare:
He remembers to write to her every week.(or :He doesn't forget to write to her every week)
He remembers writing to her every week.(or :He recalls that he wrote to her every week.)
Try to get some sleep. (or: Make an attempt to get some sleep.)
Try getting some sleep. (or: why don't you get some sleep? That's what you need.)
*The verbs allow and permit may be followed by a noun or pronoun + infinitve or by a gerund directly.
Compare:
They allow (permit) us to smoke here./ They don't allow (permit) smoking here.
